Covid 19 Rehab (Long Covid)
If you have been unlucky enough to have had Covid 19, but lucky enough to come through the other side, the next question is ‘How do I get my fitness back?’
You may have noticed becoming more breathless or fatigued doing activities that you previously managed quite easily. This can feel quite concerning, and you may have a lot of questions, such as ‘will I get better?’ ‘how long will it take?’
A viscious cycle of breathlessness and fatigue
Worries and frustrations about being unwell can lead to anxiety and breathing dysfunction which can often cause the symptoms of breathlessness to become worse.
Fatigue management and pacing are essential to the road of recovery. Learning how to manage the symptoms whilst your body heals can help you to feel more in control of the condition.
Getting active again is a different priority for everyone. It can often become easier to simply avoid activities, especially in front of others. Feeling embarassed or uncertain of their own abilities, people often try to “hide away”. On the other hand, many push through, attempting to be as active as they were before, but then falling into the ‘boom-bust’ cycle. This can be very distressing and feel like you have returned back to square one again.
The psychological impact of dealing with a new condition that is affecting your work, social and family life can also add to the difficulties in dealing with the physical impact of Long Covid. Combined it can be a challenging time.
